Comparisons are made between starcounts and color distributions for three galactic fields at l ˜ 10°: b = -14.6° - 22.0° and - 33.0° for stars with 14 < V < 20.5, and two- and three-component models of the galaxy. The parameters of the three-component models, which include a thick-disk component with z scale height of 1.0 kpc, were derived through comparison with similar data at the NGP (Yoshii et al. 1987). The two-component model is characterized by a galactic bulge, being the manifestation of a spheroid with a short effective radius of 1.2 kpc. At the lower galactic latitudes, little difference is discerned in the quality of the fitting to the data. It becomes apparent, however, that the three-component model provides a significantly superior match to the data for the b = -33° field. These comparisons indicate that a global description of galactic structure, demonstrated by polar and low-latitude distributions of stars, must include a component of the disk that is extended in the z direction. Calculation of the surface densities for the three- and two-component models indicate how closely the spheroid (bulge) with a shortened scale height mimics a thick disk. Neither two- nor three-component models account for an anomalous population of F stars present in the b = -22.3° field.
