A review of the historical data base on the S Andromedae supernova is presented. A total of 500 observations have been made of the object since 1885. The early data are not well suited for accurate visual system classifications because of the nearness of the bright M31 nebula and the lack of useful nearby reference stars. Crude spectra of the event are commensurate with a Type I supernova. It is lamented that the event occurred on the eve of modern astronomy, and that no radio signatures have ever been recorded of the remnant.
