The detection of time variability in recombination lines at wavelengths near 1 mm in MWC 349 is reported. This is the first detection of variability in radio recombination lines emitted by a radio source. In August 1988, the H29-alpha and H30-alpha lines in MWC 349 showed a double peaked profile with the redshifted peak three times stronger than the blueshifted one. In January 1989, both peaks were equally strong. In contrast, no variability was observed in the recombination line at 3.3 mm, H41-alpha. This behavior confirms that recombination line emission in MWC 349 at wavelengths around 1 mm are enhanced by maser emission with optical depths less than -1.
