A set of white-light linear and circular polarimetric data is used to redetermine the basic angles of the system. The standard analysis, which assumes a point-like emission region, yields a small inclination angle, i about 32 deg, and a magnetic colatitude of the accreting spot, delta about 114 deg, while previous work gave i about 70 deg and a correspondingly higher value of delta. It is suggested that three effects combine to explain the diverging results of different observers: (1) a finite extent of the main emission region; (2) the existence of a second emitting pole; and (3) stationary accretion at one or both of these regions. Model calculations for cases (1) and (2) are presented. They yield a wide variety of polarization angle curves for a given orbital inclination. The acceptable range of inclination angles based on these calculations is i = 20-60 deg. It is concluded that the complexity of the emission region in BL Hydri has so far prevented an exact determination of the inclination and the accretion geometry.
