Consideration is given to the photometric and kinematic characteristics of galaxies in eight close pairs of ellipticals consisting of a bright galaxy and a compact faint companion. Redshifts and central velocity dispersions are determined from high-dispersion spectra. Evidence is presented for interaction in the pairs. The mean surface brightness and central velocity dispersions of the galaxies are tightly correlated with luminosity. Two sequences of ellipticals are defined, based on the work of Michard (1979). The galaxies in this study are sequence I galaxies. It is suggested that sequence II galaxies evolve toward sequence I galaxies through dissipation of internal energy and loss of angular momentum.
