Recent observations and theoretical interpretations of Beta Cephei stars and stars related to them are reviewed. Searches for Beta Cephei stars carried out since 1977 are indicated, and the characteristics of the other types of variables detected in these searches, including slow variables, Be stars, B supergiants, ultra-short-period B stars, and Maia stars, are discussed. The location of Beta Cephei stars on the H-R diagram is considered, and evidence supporting the view that Beta Cephei and related stars are in the late core hydrogen burning phase of evolution is indicated. Amplitude changes, atmospheric effects and mode identifications in individual Beta Cephei stars are discussed, and five mechanisms which can reduce the stability of B stars in the core hydrogen burning phase of evolution and account for the complexity of Beta Cephei and 53 Persei stars are pointed out.
