The Solar Electron and Proton Telescope (SEPT) for the STEREO mission of NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program was designed and built by a collaboration of the University of Kiel, Germany, and ESA ESTEC, The Netherlands. Each of the two STEREO spacecraft will carry two SEPT instruments. Each instrument has four telescope views, two for electrons, and two for ions, looking in opposite directions. One instrument will look along the nominal interplanetary magnetic field lines in the ecliptic plane, the other instrument views perpendicular to the ecliptic. The particle energy is measured with silicon solid state detectors, 300μ m} thick. Only particles which do not penetrate the detector are counted, that is electrons from 30 to~400{keV}, and protons from 60 to~7000{keV} kinetic energy. Higher energy particles are flagged by anti-coincidence counters. NdFeB permanent magnets provide a magnetic field of about 0.5{T} to deflect electrons from the proton detectors. The electron detectors are covered with a parylene foil of 5μ m} thickness, to absorb low-energy protons. All four flight instruments were delivered to APL for integration on the spacecraft. We show the design, Monte-Carlo simulations, and calibration measurements with radioactive sources and cosmic muons. Calibration with proton beams are planned for 2006 using the flight spare instrument.
