The spectrum of the nucleus of 3C 120 showed major changes in line strengths within a period of less than a year. The most probable interpretation is that the continuum and broad lines decreased in strength by a factor of two while the narrow lines remained constant. The broad lines changed so quickly that they must arise in a region with a size less than approximately 0.2 pc and a density greater than approximately 200,000/cu cm. The spectrum of the nebulosity surrounding the nucleus shows the absorption features of a late-type stellar population at the same redshift as the nucleus. The nebulosity also has strong emission lines which are apparently being excited by a nonthermal continuum, probably leaking out from the nucleus. The ionized gas appears to be oxygen-poor by a factor of four compared to solar abundances, while there is evidence that helium may be overabundant by a factor of 2.5.
