Proceedings of the recent conference on Life in the Universe, held in Paris, November 19-21, 1979, in an attempt to estimate the various parameters of the Drake formula providing the number of extraterrestrial civilizations with a level of technology at least equal to ours in the universe, are discussed. The conference was divided into three sessions, considering, in turn, the questions of planetary evolution, the origin and evolution of life, and the evolution of intelligence. The conclusions presented tend to support the possibility of intelligent life in the universe, and emphasize the need for further multi-disciplinary research on the origin and evolution of life and the possible existence of extraterrestrial life.
