Observations so far obtained in the ultraviolet region of peculiar variable stars exhibiting nonthermal phenomena are reviewed with particular attention given to those made by the IUE satellite. Following a brief discussion of the types of information available from observations in the various spectral regions, consideration is given to observations of early type stars, including Be stars, superluminous stars and peculiar emission line stars, and of stars with visual symbiotic spectra. It is noted that, in general, the UV spectra of variable stars have been found to be very different from the visual spectra with those stars displaying marked emission line spectra in the visual often exhibiting UV absorption spectra, and unexpected high ionization absorption or emission lines occasionally observed.
