This paper deals with the distribution of some trace and major elements in pitchstones from Arran, Eigg and Iceland. The distribution of trace elements in the residual glasses of the porphyritic pitchstones and in a few of the phenocrysts is also considered. Of the trace elements, Mo, Sn, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, S and As have been determined chemically, Rb and Zr by X-ray fluorescence and Ga, Cr, V, Nb, Li, Y, La, Sr and Ba spectrographically. As the pitchstones represent only a limited range of composition, great variation is not found, but the group of Arran pitchstones is shown to be chemically distinct from the Icelandic group.
