An experiment is described on the generation and explosive destruction of current sheets in a laboratory plasma. A plane Z-pinch current sheet was generated in a previously formed plasma in a quasi-steady two-dimensional magnetic field with a zero line. Plasma probe measurements of magnetic-field reconnection are reported. It is found that magnetic energy is accumulated during a comparatively long period of time by the formation of a metastable current sheet; this is followed by the fast release of accumulated energy during the rupture of the layer, with conversion of a certain part of this energy to the energy of accelerated particles.
