The region of instability of tangential discontinuities in a stratified magnetized plasma is determined. The values of the concentrations, temperatures, and magnetic fields at which the tangential discontinuity confining a solar prominence becomes unstable are found. The disturbances can be both large-scale and small-scale. In the latter case their development can be observed in the form of streamers of cool gas flowing into the corona. Rayleigh-Taylor instability can be an important factor limiting the size of prominences.
