The use of the 21-cm line width as an indicator of the distance of spiral galaxies, as a consequence of the Tully-Fisher (1977) relation between 21-cm line width and absolute magnitude, is investigated. A statistical analysis is presented of the 21-cm line profiles of 1150 galaxies with respect to total magnitude, B - V colors, isophotal diameter and distance moduli. It is found that the observed line width is proportional to the sine of the inclination, and that the line width corrected for inclination is equal to the maximum circular velocity. The slope of the generalized Tully-Fisher relation is observed to be a rapidly varying function of the isophotal wavelength of the magnitude system used. The distance moduli derived from the H I line widths are found to be in excellent agreement with those derived from tertiary distance indicators, and the absolute magnitude and isophotal diameter of the Galaxy implied by these relations are shown to be in excellent agreement with those previously derived from a two-component photometric model.
