The X-ray emission from M87 is quite symmetric about the center of the galaxy, but both the optical emission-line data and the radio emission show a marked north-south asymmetry. Neither transonic head-tail radio source dynamics nor inhomogeneous accretion or outflow can account for these observations. It is found that they can be reconciled by a model which couples radiative accretion with very slow (200 km/s) subsonic motion of M87 to the north.
