TIMED measures several trace species plus other fields relevant to chemistry such as temperature, radiative emissions, horizontal winds and solar flux. This presentation will focus on assessment of how these measurements accord with our current understanding from global models. The story is mixed. There are aspects that are simulated very well in models but others where models diverge from the observations. In some cases, the discrepancy can be reduced by changing poorly-know model parameters such as tidal forcing by diurnal heating in the troposphere or the magnitude of the turbulent Prandtl number. Other discrepancies point to gaps in our understanding.
