Using a quasi-one-dimensional fluid approximation for the solar wind interaction with a comet, velocity profiles for the inward streaming plasma in a cometary atmosphere are generated and, in turn, adopted to compute the number density distributions of cometary ions produced upstream of the comet head. The external solutions so obtained are interpolated to the inner ion coma models assuming the cometary atmosphere to be expanding radially with constant speed as the neutral gases. From this procedure the dynamical behavior of the cometary ionospheric plasma of a Halley-type comet is approximated as a combination of subsonic inward flow and outflow from the central source. This is the first report of ongoing model calculations to simulate such solar wind modifications of the cometary ion comae.
