The behavior of Ez (the vertical component of the atmospheric electric field) before the commencement of and during magnetic disturbances was studied on the basis of data from stations on the Kol'sk peninsula for 1980. Ez variations in regions of the Harang discontinuity are examined, and space-time distributions of positive and negative disturbances of Ez are investigated. An analysis of MLT effects in the development of these disturbances confirms the hypothesis that they have a magnetospheric nature and are connected with inflowing and outflowing field-aligned currents in the ionosphere.
