The needs on new photometric data for the pre-launch, the mission and the post-mission phases of HIPPARCOS are presented. The new observations tend to optimize the mHp prediction as well as the derivation of physical stellar parameters complementary to HIPPARCOS astrometric results. The observing programmes are defined according to spectral type, magnitude, declination and right ascension intervals adapted to the selected photometric system, telescope size and site and observing period. Several institutes collaborate in this task in both hemispheres and a progress report on their activities is given.
