Two familiar paradigms with important implications for the interaction between the magnetosphere and ionosphere -- Dungey reconnection and the auroral arc current system -- are revisited to illustrate the qualitative differences in system behavior that arise when interacting processes are considered as an integrated whole. The interactions described here are built upon empirical and theoretical knowledge of basic constitutive elements and emphasize phenomenological and aggregated understanding in terms of spatial distributions, scale interactions, transport rates, and dynamic feedback. Attempts to synthesize seemingly independent physical processes into a holistic model of MI system dynamics reveals a need for new multipoint measurements in the thermosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere and new diagnostic techniques such as ion outflow imaging.
