It is shown that energy release at the early stages in the expansion of the universe must lead to distortions in the relict radiation spectrum, that a specific distortion corresponds to each expansion stage, and that detection of deviations from the Planckian spectrum should yield valuable information about the thermal history of the universe. The Rayleigh-Jeans part of the spectrum is examined, and the characteristic spectra are found to be formed by the concurrent action of Compton and bremsstrahlung processes. Analytical formulas are derived which describe the characteristics of distorted spectra, and results are presented of numerical calculations for a series of concrete variants. Limits are obtained on the magnitude of energy release for different stages of expansion. It is shown that the observed relict radiation was formed when the value of z was greater than 100 millions.
