A general discussion and description of the Very Large Array (VLA) is presented. The site of the VLA, design criteria formulated for the VLA, the movable antennas of the VLA, and current progress on its construction are examined. This aperture-synthesis radio telescope will consist of three 21-km arms forming an equiangular Y and containing 27 component antennas 25 km in diameter. That means 351 pairs of elements connected together as radio interferometers, capable of up to a few million independent measurements of a source tracked from horizon to horizon. Resolution of up to 0.13 seconds of arc could be obtained at a wavelength of 1.3 cm, and proportional resolving power would be available at lower frequencies. When completed in 1981, the VLA will have 10 to 100 times the power of any existing radio telescope.
