Some difficulties of the Newtonian theory of gravitation which led to the formulation of the general relativity theory are presented. Then the basic ideas of general relativity are introduced at an elementary level. The properties of a few most important cosmological models are briefly discussed. These are: the static Einstein Universe, Friedman models, Milne-McCrea's newtonian cosmology and the steady state theory. Arguments for and against each model are briefly summarized. History of the universe according to Friedman models is described. Finally, Dirac's 'Large Numbers Universe' and Wheeler's 'Reprocessing Universe' are presented as examples of to date speculations.
