The paper reviews the distinguishing characteristics of such galaxies in excited states as Markarian galaxies, Haro galaxies, compact galaxies, N galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, and quasars. Attention is focused primarily on Seyfert galaxies, their photometric classification, spectroscopic classification, and their physical conditions. The features of recent observations of continuum radiation and line radiation are discussed, and some theories on the mechanism of line emission in Seyfert galaxies are outlined, including excitation by synchroton radiation, excitation by shockwaves, and excitation by supersonic winds. Information is given on interstellar absorption of emission from Seyfert galaxies, radio emission from Seyfert galaxies, and X-rays from Seyfert galaxies. Tentative conclusions regarding the classification of quasars are briefly examined.
