Scientific paper

A summary is presented of ten papers comprising the final report of the Mariner 10 imaging team. The set of experimental objectives for a flyby imaging experiment is outlined together with the salient results of the Mariner 10 imaging experiment at Mercury. The papers include an initial presentation of the second Mercury encounter results, a description of the data acquisition and processing methods, an analysis of the Mercurian rotation period, results of photometric measurements of the planet, a preliminary geologic terrain map, and a working hypothesis for the planet's surface history. It is noted that Mercury has been found probably to be a differentiated planet with a large earthlike iron core and to exhibit a surface history closely similar to that recorded on the moon.
