Some aspects of the application of fragmentation and superposition models to the calculation of the development of extensive air showers are examined. Data on the chemical composition of primary cosmic particles are compared with predictions on the basis of extensive air shower models. A discussion of various shower parameters leads to the conclusion that at least the showers observed at sea level are generated predominantly by protons.
