We present results from an analysis of the radio properties of two samples of sources: 1. EGRET-detected AGNs and 2. relatively bright and densely sampled southern AGNs not detected with EGRET. The radio properties of the detected and non-detected sources show similarity. When analysing the millimeter flux curves it turns out that most of the EGRET-detections were made when the source was going through the initial stages of a radio flare. These results suggest that many sources that exhibit blazar-like behavior in the millimeter domain could be detected at gamma energies if observed during the initial growth stages of a strong radio flare. .
