The thermal infrared spectral region is useful for determining the chemistry and the hydration state of sulfates. Spectral absorption features related to the vibrations of the sulfate anion are modified by the constituent cation in the sulfate mineral as well as the hydration state. Hydration of the sulfates also can cause additional spectral features related to the vibrational modes of the water in the mineral structure. Laboratory analyses will be presented to show these variations and the results will be applied to the NE Meridiani and Aram Chaos regions of Mars using TES and THEMIS data to identify the sulfates that are present and the implications for their formational environment. We also are studying the visible-near infrared and Moessbauer spectral properties of these sulfate minerals in order to correlate our interpretations of various Martian datasets.
