The temperature distribution in umbras of 'small' (umbral area about 20 millionths of a solar hemisphere) and 'average' (umbral area about 50 millionths of a solar hemisphere) sunspots is calculated using observations of monochromatic sunspot profiles obtained with a high-speed photoelectric spectrophotometer. The temperature in sunspots with these areas is found to be substantially lower than previously reported.
