On the basis of a previous model for the emission from 'nonstationary' filaments in Cas A, it is shown that these filaments may be the source of the soft X-ray emission (1 to 10 keV) from this nebula. Observational verification of this hypothesis is shown to depend on an inhomogeneous structure for the X-ray region and a ten-year variation in separate structural details. Calculations are made which indicate that the emission from interstellar gas swept along by the shell of Cas A should have a much harder spectrum than observed and that rarefied nonrelativistic gas of the shell as well as the propelled interstellar gas should emit noticeable fluxes with energies between 10 and 300 keV. The absolute flux and X-ray spectrum of the Tycho remnant are explained on the basis of emission (under 4 keV) from propelled interstellar gas and emission (above 4 keV) from the hot nonrelativistic gas of the shell.
