Early achievements in X-ray astronomy are briefly reviewed along with the discovery of binary X-ray sources with the aid of the Uhuru satellite, and the standard compact-object model for X-ray binaries. Observations of celestial X-ray bursts are discussed, particularly bursts occurring in globular clusters and near the center of the Galaxy. Characteristics and forms of X-ray bursts are described, and a unique burst source in Scorpio is noted which emits thousands of bursts each day and has been referred to as the 'Rapid Burster' or a 'celestial machine gun'. A burst model involving neutron-star binary systems is outlined.
