Scientific paper

Various types of low-light level detectors used for ground-based astronomical observations are described with attention to the advantages, deficiencies, and specific applications of each. Discussed are: (1) the photographic plate, (2) two-dimensional detectors using cathodes, (3) composite detector systems including the Image Dissector Scanner, and (4) solid-state diode arrays. It is suggested that the variety of detectors will decrease in the future with the development of a limited number of detectors adaptable to different observational conditions.
