On April 1, 1981 Prognoz-8 measured protons with energies above 100 MeV
and 500 MeV from a flare which occurred on that day in active region
McMath 17539. Possible acceleration of particles up to high energies in
this flare is inferred from a temporal comparison between the optical,
radio, X-ray, and gamma ray emissions and the first arrival of protons.
