Comparison is made between ion spectra observed at energetic storm particle events of 27 August 1978 (Gosling et al. 1981) and 28 September 1978 (Klecker et al. 1981) and diffusive first-order Fermi shock acceleration. The acceleration process is modeled with a Monte Carlo simulation where the particle acceleration time is comparable to the shock lifetime and the scattering mfp is proportional to rigidity. Good agreement between the simulation and observations suggest that diffusive quasi-parallel shocks can accelerate thermal ions directly from the solar wind.
