Scientific paper

A concise specification of heliographic coordinates is presented followed by an elementary illustration of orthographic projection applied to the sun. The use of orthographic graticules and of Porter's (1943) rectangular graticule for determination of sunspot positions is mentioned. Commencing in 1892 the history of solar orthographic graticules is traced to the present day, and the communication is concluded with a note on the present availability of graticules.
