Rocket sounding and remote sensing in the radio spectrum are used to provide data on mesospheric winds in low latitudes. Tidal components are described as difficult to observe, and not fitting well into the models constructed to predict their behavior. At upper mesospheric heights (60-65 km) large random fluctuations at gravity wave periods play an important role in wind studies at that altitude, and these have been well observed. Attention is given to VHF radar scattering as a tool in observing turbulent fluctuations.
