Radiochemical and neutron activation analyses, as well as microprobe techniques, were used to investigate silicate inclusions in a variety of group IAB iron meteorite samples; the relationship between the inclusions and chondrites is considered. The levels of lithophiles and siderophiles in the meteorite specimens are studied, and two kinds of inclusion, one which has undergone no igneous differentiation and the other which has apparently experienced partial melting, are identified. It is hypothesized that the silicates were formed in a process similar to that by which chondrites were produced, though in a different region of the nebula. Thus, they provide a record of O2 fugacity and O isotopic concentration in that region. Compositions of the metal-silicate mixtures indicate that they were subjected to heating at temperatures above 1000 K for an extended period. It is suggested that two anomalous stony meteorites, which have the same age (4.6 Gyr) as the silicate inclusions, may be related to them.
