Scientific paper

Various mechanisms for modulating energetic electron fluxes and VLF radiations by hydromagnetic pulsations at midlatitudes are compared. The mechanisms include geomagnetic-field modulation of the radiation increment and the loss-cone energetic-electron diffusion coefficient, modulation of VLF-radiation propagation paths, magnetic- and electric-field pulsations associated with variations in solar-wind parameters, and a Kelvin-Helmholtz-type instability of the magnetospheric plasma. Observational consequences of each mechanism and possibilities for experimental verification of each are discussed.
