Spectroscopic and photometric discriminants which can be used to distinguish cool metal-deficient DA white dwarfs from subdwarfs are discussed. It is shown that due to the effects of convection on the atmosphere structure, a white dwarf has a Balmer-line spectrum which is quite distinct from that of a subdwarf of the same effective temperature.
