In discussing the structure and evolution of the Galaxy, attention is
given to the age, number, chemical composition, orbit, motion, and
distribution of stars. The way in which the first stars were formed from
the collapse of the protogalaxy is described. It is shown that the
eccentricity of a star's orbit is an indication of its age.
