The problem of the origin of galactic cosmic rays is reviewed. The observed properties of galactic cosmic rays and the interferences that can be drawn from them are summarized. The basic properties of the interstellar medium are included. Scatter-free acceleration of energetic particles by shock waves is outlined. The acceleration mechanism is then extended, taking into account scattering. Modifications associated with time dependence and losses due to interaction with the background medium are described along with effects of nonplanar geometry. The possibility that galactic cosmic rays are accelerated by supernova shocks is discussed. Difficulties encountered with the shock acceleration theory indicate that a completely nonlinear treatment is necessary. This must comprehend the generation amplification and damping of hydromagnetic waves in a medium with strong supersonic turbulence and streaming cosmic ray fluxes.
