Scientific paper

Stability criteria for collision-free self-gravitating stellar systems
are discussed with applications to elliptical galaxies. It is concluded
that rotationally symmetric systems which are either sufficiently oblate
or prolate are unstable against ringlike and sausagelike perturbations,
respectively.
