Transrelativistic plasma, where the mean energy per particle may be or equivalent to (me) c squared, is considered. In the deep potential well around a compact object, plasma can retain thermal energies of 1 to 100 Mev per particle, even if it is gravitationally bound. The radiative losses are then likely to be due to synchrotron/Compton emission. Pair production may be so prolific that positrons greatly outnumber the ions; the ion and electron temperatures would be unequal unless there are strong collective effects which couple them. These processes, important in determining the radiative and dynamical properties of galactic nuclei, are described.
