The physics of the neutron star, its atmosphere and its environment are discussed, relating to observational results from X-ray astronomy. The behavior of an X-ray pulsar, Vela X-1, observed with the X-ray astronomy satellite Hakucho, is considered in relation to the nature of the neutron star and its interaction with an accretion disk. X-ray bursts, also observed with the satellite, are a rich source of information for physics of the atmosphere and the plasma environment of the neutron star. The hard X-ray imaging of the Crab Nebula undertaken by balloon observation reveals the internal structure of the Crab Nebula.
