Several series of orbits for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) about the Galaxy are obtained along which the two clouds are assumed to have been in a binary state for the last 5 to 10 billion years. The dynamical behavior of some 800 test particles distributed within the Galaxy and the two clouds is followed numerically and compared with the observed bending of the galactic disk and the Magellanic Stream. Two cases are examined in which the mass of the Galaxy is taken to be 275 and 140 billion solar masses. It is suggested that if the bending of the disk is due to the tidal effect of the Magellanic Clouds, the total mass of the Galaxy (within 50 kpc of the galactic center) may be less than 270 billion solar masses. Tests are performed to reproduce the Magellanic Stream, high-velocity clouds, and other gas complexes near the Galaxy. These tests fail to reproduce the high negative radial velocity of the stream, but indicate that the orbits of the LMC and SMC are in a plane perpendicular to the line joining the present position of the sun and the galactic center. A proposed primordial-gas model for the stream is investigated dynamically in an attempt to explain the velocity discrepancy as well as the positional coincidence between the stream and other members of the Local Group.
