Spallation due to interaction between gas and high-energy protons in the compact nonthermal sources in QSOs is investigated. It is suggested that boron is among the primary spallation products and that the lines of B III at 2066.3 A and B II at 1362.46 A should be detectable in QSO spectra. An unsuccessful search for these lines in the spectra of 16 QSOs is described. From an analysis of the ionization structure of emitting and absorbing regions, an upper limit of 1/15 is obtained for the boron-to-carbon ratio in the QSOs. The normal composition of the gas and the failure to detect boron are shown to indicate that: (1) the gas cannot have originated in the very central regions of continuum sources with sizes not exceeding about 1 pc and (2) the flux of protons with a mean energy of at least 100 MeV must be about 0.0001 times the energy carried by electrons in the most powerful continuum sources. It is concluded that either the proton flux is small or the particles do not interact significantly with the gas because they are ejected axisymmetrically within a very small solid angle.
