Results of experiments involving the bombardment of ice targets with energetic ion beams in the temperature range 10-100 K suggest that interaction between cosmic rays and ice grains could be an effective mechanism of H2 production in dense molecular clouds. It is shown that the production rate of H2 molecules by interaction of cosmic rays with frozen mantles on grains is comparable to or higher than 10 to the -17th per cu cm s.
