It is pointed out that in close binary systems it is now believed that the process of mass transfer between the component stars in general is not conservative. Various cases of mass and momentum loss are investigated, and the trends of period P against mass ratio mu are calculated. A comparison of theoretical values with the observed periods of the semidetached systems of Algol type is carried out. It is contended that the general pattern of the values log P-log mu for the observed semidetached systems can be explained by allowing for a moderate loss of matter (20-30% of the initial total mass) and a greater loss of orbital angular momentum (60-70%), taking place, essentially, during the phase of the fast mass transfer.
