The thermal radiation spectrum and luminosity of an optically thick perfectly ionized nonrelativistic plasma is investigated analytically, deriving the generalized Kompaneets equation for a finite medium and solving it for a number of limits involving the ratios of the photon-scattering, absorption, and Comptonization lengths. The anisotropic angular distribution of the plasma radiation and the ratio of plasma luminosity to black-body luminosity at temperatures (1-1000) x 10 to the 5th K and electron densities 10 to the 8th to 10 to the 22nd/cu cm are shown in graphs. These findings are applicable to studies of X-ray emission from point objects and optically thick accretion disks.
