Conditions under which physical space changes its topology, that is, becomes nonconnected, are investigated. The possibility of regions becoming separated from physical space is examined, and it is shown that superdense configurations by their character are close to being so separated. It is noted that the breakdown of connectedness occurs during the gravitational collapse of massive stars and that the pattern of the breakdown is similar to the pattern of gravitational self-closure accompanied by the gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric configurations. It is thus suggested that singularities are formed as the result of the breakdown of the connectedness of physical space.
